Over the past year, Annette and I have changed our focus from textile manufacturing (farm to yarn products) and began a life-long journey of providing people with wellness activities through agriculture, equine-assisted learning, and the arts. I believe strong mental health and wellness is, at times, missing from rural places. However, it can also be found if we know where to look. Over the past several years, I have been working towards certification in equine-assisted learning with a focus on mental health and story. I have found great strength and courage in working with horses that I believe can touch our souls and, surprisingly, help us navigate the complexities of our mental health. Horses, I believe, have a transformative power that is unique in the world of mental health, and it is important to explore how these activities can boost our emotional well-being.
1. Connection with Nature
Horses are intuitive animals that mirror our emotions without judgment. By engaging with these sentient beings in a natural setting, individuals can reconnect with the healing energy of nature. The peaceful environment of a horse farm or pasture can serve as a powerful catalyst for reducing stress and anxiety levels.
2. Cultivating Trust and Communication
Equine-assisted activities provide a safe space for individuals to cultivate trust and hone their communication skills. Horses respond to non-verbal cues and emotional signals, teaching us the importance of authentic connection. Through interactions with horses, participants learn to communicate effectively, set boundaries, and build healthy relationships.
3. Boosting Self-Confidence
Success stories abound of individuals who have experienced a significant boost in self-confidence through equine therapy. The sense of accomplishment that comes from guiding a horse through an obstacle course or mastering a new riding skill can be truly empowering. Horses have a unique way of reflecting our strengths back to us, reinforcing a positive self-image.
4. Mindfulness and Presence
In a world filled with distractions and constant stimulation, horses offer a grounding presence that invites us to be fully present in the moment. The act of grooming, feeding, or simply observing horses can foster a sense of mindfulness and awareness. By immersing oneself in the present experience, individuals can find calm amidst life's chaos.
5. Emotional Regulation
Equine-assisted learning can be especially beneficial for individuals struggling with emotional regulation. Horses provide immediate feedback to our emotional state, teaching us to recognize and manage intense feelings. Through guided exercises and interactions with horses, participants learn to regulate their emotions, leading to greater emotional resilience.
